The Session Is Only Half the Healing
What you do in the hours and days after your Hijama session matters just as much as the treatment itself. Your body has been through a significant process — stagnant blood has been removed, fresh circulation has been stimulated, and your tissues are in an active state of renewal. Supporting that process properly will maximise your results and help you avoid the small number of side effects that poor aftercare can cause.
This guide covers everything your practitioner will tell you — and a little more detail besides.
Your Recovery Timeline
The First 2 Hours
This is the most important window. Your body is actively responding to the treatment and your skin is temporarily more permeable at the cupping points.
- Drink a large glass of water as soon as you leave the clinic — ideally warm or room temperature
- Keep the treated areas covered. Avoid exposing them to cold air, fans, or air conditioning
- Avoid showering or bathing for at least 2 hours after your session
- Rest if possible. Sit quietly, lie down, or take a gentle walk. Avoid rushing
- Avoid eating a heavy meal immediately — something light and nourishing is ideal
The First 24 Hours
The treated skin is still healing during the first day. The marks from the cups will be most visible during this period.
- Keep the cupped areas dry. When showering, avoid directing water directly at the treated points
- Use warm water rather than hot or cold when bathing
- Avoid swimming pools, saunas, or steam rooms entirely
- Avoid strenuous physical activity, heavy exercise, or anything that causes heavy sweating
- Continue drinking plenty of water throughout the day — aim for 2+ litres
- Get a full night of sleep if at all possible
The Recovery Week
Your body continues to process the treatment during this week. Marks will fade progressively — typically from the outside in, becoming lighter each day.
- Normal activity can resume from day 2 onward, but avoid extremely intensive exercise for 3–4 days
- You may experience mild soreness at the cupping points, particularly where there was significant tension — this is the tissue responding and is normal
- Continue eating well and staying hydrated throughout the week
- Some patients notice an improvement in energy or sleep quality during this period as the treatment takes full effect
What Marks Are Normal
The circular marks left by the cups are one of the most common concerns for first-time patients. Here is what to expect:
- Dark purple or red circles — Very common, especially where there is significant blood stagnation. This indicates the treatment is working effectively
- Pink or light red marks — Normal, particularly in areas of good circulation
- Slight swelling or raised skin — Can occur in areas of significant tension. Settles within 24–48 hours
- Marks fading within 3–7 days — Typical for most patients. Some heavily congested areas may take up to 10–14 days to fully clear
These marks are not bruises in the conventional sense — they do not result from trauma to the skin. They are the body's response to the negative pressure drawing stagnant blood to the surface. They look more dramatic than they feel.
Nutrition After Hijama
What you eat after your session can meaningfully support or hinder your recovery. The guidance is simple:
- Warm water and herbal teas
- Honey (especially black seed honey)
- Dates and figs
- Vegetable soups and broths
- Fresh fruit, especially pomegranate
- Whole grains and legumes
- Olive oil and natural fats
- Cold drinks and ice
- Dairy products (milk, cheese)
- Red meat and heavy meals
- Spicy or fried foods
- Caffeine and energy drinks
- Alcohol entirely
- Processed or fast food
The Prophet ﷺ is narrated to have recommended honey for healing, and black seed (Nigella sativa) carries its own Prophetic endorsement. Both are excellent post-Hijama supports for your body's recovery process.
Exercise After Hijama
Rest on the day of your treatment. Avoid any strenuous exercise, sport, or heavy lifting on the day of your session. From day 2, gentle activity such as walking, stretching, or light yoga is fine. Return to full exercise from day 3 or 4 onward, listening to your body as you do so. If an area feels particularly tender, give it more time.
Signs to Watch For
Hijama performed by a qualified practitioner with sterile equipment is safe. Serious complications are extremely rare. However, please contact us or seek medical attention if you experience:
- Signs of infection at a cupping point — increasing redness spreading beyond the mark, warmth, pus, or fever
- Bleeding that does not stop with gentle pressure
- Severe dizziness or fainting that does not pass within a few minutes of lying down and drinking water
- Any allergic reaction — widespread rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling not at the cupping points
These situations are rare but we want you to be informed. If in doubt, message us on WhatsApp — we are always available to advise.
Take care of yourself. The work that happens in the days after Hijama is as important as the session itself. Rest, drink water, eat well, and give your body the time it needs to heal fully. May Allah grant you complete shifa.
